Find answers to common questions about BruteFence
General Questions
BruteFence is professional security software that automatically protects your Windows server from RDP brute-force attacks. It monitors failed login attempts in the Windows Event Log and automatically blocks attacking IP addresses using the Windows Firewall.
BruteFence is ideal for system administrators, hosting providers, VPS operators, and any organization running Windows servers with public RDP access. It's especially useful in cloud environments and remote work infrastructure.
BruteFence offers native Windows integration at the Event Log and firewall level, requiring no external software. It's extremely lightweight, easy to deploy, and operational within minutes.
Yes, BruteFence works perfectly on VPS instances, Azure VMs, AWS EC2 instances, and any other Windows virtual machine. The software's hardware-bound licensing supports virtual environments.
Minimal resource usage: less than 50 MB RAM and negligible CPU. The service runs in the background and doesn't affect server performance even during peak times.
Technical Questions
BruteFence supports Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, as well as Windows 10 Pro and Windows 11 Pro. .NET 8.0 Runtime is required, which is included with the installer.
Yes, fully compatible with Remote Desktop Services (RDS) and Terminal Server environments. One license is required per server, regardless of the number of users.
The software continuously monitors the Windows Security Event Log for Event ID 4625 (failed login). When an IP address reaches the configured threshold (default: 2 attempts), it automatically creates a blocking rule in the Windows Firewall.
In the GUI, go to the Settings tab to modify the threshold. Recommended values: 2-3 (strict), 5 (balanced), 10+ (permissive). Lower values provide faster protection but may cause more false positives.
Installation
Complete installation takes less than 5 minutes. The installer automatically configures the service, sets up default protection, and immediately starts protecting your server.
Administrator privileges are required because the software runs as a Windows service and modifies firewall rules. The GUI also needs to run as administrator to modify settings.
Yes, the installer supports silent installation for enterprise deployments. Use the /VERYSILENT switch with the Inno Setup installer. Configuration can be pre-set via Registry.
BruteFence can be removed from Windows Add/Remove Programs. The uninstaller automatically stops the service, removes firewall rules, and cleans up Registry entries.
Licensing
Yes, a 7-day free trial is available with full functionality. No credit card required for the trial. After the trial period, a license key is needed for continued use.
Each Windows server/workstation requires a separate license. The license is hardware-bound (Installation Token + MAC address), so it cannot be transferred to another machine. VPS cloning requires a new license.
After license expiration, the software continues in limited mode for 3 days (grace period). During this time, you can renew your license. After the grace period, protection stops, but existing firewall rules remain.
Yes, we offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you're not satisfied with the software, we'll refund the full purchase price, no questions asked. Contact support@brutefence.com.
